2K Brings Onboard Apex Legends Developer to Boost Challenged Action Game Ambitious Title

2K Games has secured Ben Brinkman from the creators of Apex Legends to direct the studio crew at their internal studio, which is currently crafting the upcoming third-person roguelike extraction-shooter known as this innovative game.

Management Transition Comes After Lukewarm Response

The new appointee assumes the leadership position at 31st Union following the exit of former leader Michael Condrey, who was removed from his post due to Project Ethos' lackluster initial reveal last autumn.

On Wednesday, 2K president David Ismailer updated staff about this organizational change through an official communication, which emphasized that early feedback sessions had indicated the necessity for a more defined vision.

Ismailer noted that the developers is now reimagining Project Ethos with a refreshed vision, aiming to satisfy community desires.

A Pattern of Key Acquisitions

This announcement echoes a comparable step taken by the publisher in the summer, when they recruited an industry veteran from Blizzard to contribute to the beloved franchise development group.

Below is the entire content from Ismailer's announcement:

Team—

I know you all just completed your gathering - I trust you’re as thrilled as I am with the positive developments. Last time I sent you all a note, I expressed the following: “I believe in this team. You all are some of the most motivated and creative developers we have had the opportunity to partner with - and we’re looking forward for that partnership to continue.”

With your dedication and adaptability, particularly over the last year, you continue to prove that.

The community feedback from last autumn’s Project ETHOS demo was revealing. It validated the potential of a action-packed game but told us we still had refinements needed. It highlighted the requirement for a more distinct brand.

It’s been inspiring to see how far you’ve come. You accepted the criticism to consideration and reimagined the title with a renewed goal - one that’s poised to fulfill its potential to our players.

Our confidence in this project strengthens every day. To further the outstanding advancement you’ve made, I’m excited to introduce Ben Brinkman as the new Studio Head of 31st Union. Following some time of conversations, he starts with us on the specified date.

His management and background in the competitive gaming field is vast, having dedicated the last 15 years creating and overseeing some of the most well-known titles in gaming, for example Call of Duty: Black Ops, and more recently, Apex Legends.

I invite you all in welcoming him in the coming days. We are all looking forward to keep seeing the progress of Project ETHOS in the months to follow.

The President

Experience of the Incoming Leader

Brinkman currently serves in the role of senior developer and production lead at Respawn Entertainment for their flagship title. Brinkman earlier was employed at Treyarch and Activision in various production roles on the iconic franchise games, and, before that, had periods at 2K and Electronic Arts.

Game Details and Vision

The upcoming game was revealed in October 2024 together with a public demo. Then, the developers portrayed the game as a "no-cost, 3rd-person action-packed experience and an exciting advancement on the genre."

"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Build your hero in live gameplay to suit your personal playstyle," the description states. "Take on the competition with new abilities, challenges, and challenges that evolve every round. Will you leave securely with your hard-earned loot? Alternatively aim high, risk it all, and pray your team can secure victory? The decision is up to you."

The game lacks an official release date or platforms, but fans can anticipate additional details as development progresses.
