A minimum of thirteen people killed and ninety-eight injured in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the pace and management of the country's major government projects.

The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We shall meticulously determine the cause of this incident,” affirmed the country's president.

The official announced that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those involved.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the former leader, whose time in office ended the year before. This project was a hallmark of his administration's strategic agenda for the southern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The building of both railway systems was supervised by the army, marking a significant growth of its responsibilities in national works. They were built at an accelerated pace, beating predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently fueled persistent questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This includes an previous accident this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-lethal derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a primary political opposition called for an urgent halt in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.

This stoppage was requested until the completion of a full independent investigation. The party emphasized that the loss of life "calls for prompt explanations."

In reaction, the president insisted that the train had been functioning in full adherence to all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the construction and operation of these strategic undertakings.
