RAF Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a combined operation on an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK's MoD.

The location, identified by surveillance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountains just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a series of approach shafts leading to the facility... early reports suggest the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the operation late on Saturday and each participating jet made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - referred to as ISIS - imposed militant control over parts of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike demonstrates our UK leadership, and resolve to work closely with allied nations, to eradicate any revival of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey stated.

RAF aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of IS following its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of our armed forces who took part in this mission for their expertise and their courage," the Defence Secretary added. "They were among a great many UK service members deployed over the holidays. This mission, to take out militants who threaten our security, shows how British military are ready to step up, continuously, protecting the UK at home and influential overseas."

Last December, the US military executed what it described as a "major assault" on IS targets in the country, following an attack claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. reports IS still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Iraq and Syria.
