Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in employing video review systems.
Replay systems will be launched at The Championships this year.
Competitors will gain the ability to challenge particular decisions made by the chair umpire, echoing the practice currently in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
The new system will be operational on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.
This step arrives only a year after the All England Club implemented ELC, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line judges.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the umpire to re-examine other situations, including:
- If a ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
- Possible interference end of a point.
Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the number of reviews a competitor can initiate.
Practical Application
A recent case took place in Indian Wells recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.
Draper admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."
The umpire watched a video and ruled the player was guilty of interference, granting the point to Medvedev.
Wider Implementation
This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews implemented at every one of its events.
Further Updates
Another innovation at Wimbledon this year will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.
This addresses instances where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was in or out.
Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
